Make Money through Cutting-Edge Persuasion Skills

By Tom Marcoux,America's Communciation Coach
(a brief glimpse of skills in the book Persuade Your Way to Success and David Barron's training)

How are your persuasion skills? Do you study every day to improve your skills? If not, you could be missing more money, more fun, and more fulfilling relationships. My colleague David Barron, author of "The Dynamic Keys to Persuasion" and I are dedicated to helping people master persuasion skills so they can take their lives to the next level of success and fulfillment. It has been said, "Nothing happens until there is a sale - no one gets paychecks; no one gets engaged; and no one get the benefits of the product or service."

Tip #1: Practice Picking Out the Person's Preferred Input Style
Each person has a preferred way of taking in new information. In order to persuade, you need to discover quickly how the person likes to be approached. You must learn the styles and practice (a seminar is, of course, the ideal, safe place to practice). Does someone only believe testimonials? (Is it verbal or visual that convinces them?) If you don't start giving the information in the way the person prefers, you can turn the person off like a light switch. For example, many salespeople try to get an appointment with me. Only about once a year, does a salesperson discover my preferred input style. All of the others have 'shot themselves in the foot' which is no way to get in the door!

Tip#2: Ask Questions
David Barron emphasizes that every top persuader knows how to ask the right questions to warm up the person and create a connection. David emphasizes that you must "listen, Listen, LISTEN."

Tip #3: Do NOT ask "why"
David Barron emphasizes that the "why" question hurts YOU in two ways. First, you put the person on the defensive. Second, you kick them into their rational mind. I add this point, "People buy on emotion and justify on fact." So you're not going to persuade someone by kicking them into a less compelling mode.

Tip #4: Practice Picking Out the Person's Personality Style
What is the person's personality style? Also, what is your personality style and how can you compensate for it? - so you create rapport and not a collision between two trains. How can you discover if the person is a 'Director' or 'Analyzer' or 'Relater' or something else? Here's an example: John is a 'director' and blunt - but he must adapt his style or lose the loyalty and productivity of his employee Susan who is a 'relater.' These skills of adapting to other people are not "quick fixes," and they are not changing yourself into a "phony mask." They are using your natural tendencies and pressing your own buttons. They are true ways for you to put your best foot forward. This is the process of Impression Management.

Tip #5: Do Your 'Homework' so that You Negotiate with Ease and for Profit
Your homework includes knowing two vital things: a) your Maximum Supportable Position and b) your Least Acceptable Result. For example, you're selling a previously-owned car. You want $6,000, but you're willing to settle for $2,500. When you know this - and you can demonstrate why it is reasonable that the vehicle is worth $6,000 - you have strength. You can negotiate well. Remember: with anything over $2,500 - you're winning. And, you must practice the special body language for responding to any first offer... And that detail, I would be glad to show you at the March 22, 2003 Seminar entitled "Make Money through Cutting-Edge Persuasion Skills."
