Your Journey of Success and Fulfillment
At one point, a reader sent me a question about the next steps for gaining success.
Here is my reply:
To move forward there are a number of vital components including:
- self-leadership
- mentors
- networking
- industry-specific knowledge
- Time-Leverage(tm)
- sustainability
Here I will briefly cover some ideas. In the past 23 years, I have been personally coaching people to leap forward to make their dreams come true. Also, I have been addressing numerous audiences. Some ideas come up again and again. After my presentations, audience members consistently come up to me and mention how they found certain ideas to be helpful.
1. Self-leadership
One principle is: "Keep score and achieve more." Author Robert Schuller noted that spectacular achievement is preceded by unspectacular preparation. For example, when I am going to have a meeting with a potential investor, I rehearse. And I keep a log of how many times (and minutes) that I rehearse. [More information about having persistence, persuasion skills and getting the important things done is visible in my book Nothing Can Stop You This Year!]
2. Mentors
Mentors help a person leap forward in his or her chosen industry. The secret to getting a mentor is to help the mentor first. If the mentor is giving a speech or has a book, you can write an article that promotes the mentor’s work first. Develop a friendship. Start the friendship by serving the potential mentor’s goals.
3. Networking
Harvey Mackay wrote that in networking you are only as good as what [knowledge, help, contacts] you give away. For example, just recently, I connected a significant contact-person with an editor whom I have known for 16 years. I have now served both my contact and the editor. Serving is a good guideline in networking.
4. Industry-specific knowledge
One of the fastest ways to gain vital knowledge is to interview top people in your field. 5. Time-Leverage(tm)
Time-Leverage (a concept I coined) is better than time management. Time management focuses on the to-do list. On the other hand, Time-Leverage provides strategies that help you get more done; get the most important things done; and feel good doing it! Through Time-Leverage, my clients overcome procrastination. 6. Sustainability
When you first open your business, sustainability is a key concern. One way to do this is to start small. You can work a regular job and start your own business on the side. At a certain point, when cash flow is going well, you may feel the intuition that it is a good time for you to switch to full-time work with your own business. Often, to sustain a business, it is important to have multiple streams of income. For example, a filmmaker can have clients (for commercials and industry-related documentaries) while developing his or her own feature film projects.
