Time Management Doesn't Work, But Time-Leverage Does!

The principle "Manage things, but lead people" is a crucial distinction when you want to get more done in less time - with less stress. Simply trying to manage one's personal behavior has failed many people. You need something better: Time-Leverage.

I have addressed thousands of people on the topic of time management, and it has been part of my mission to dispel time management myths for corporate employees, salespeople, small business owners and graduate students at Stanford University.

MYTH #1: You just need more time management strategies.

MYTH #2: One day planner fits all.

MYTH #3: The more tasks on your to-do list equals the more you get done.

MYTH #4: If to-do lists do not motivate you, then you're just doing time management wrong -- and you're doomed to procrastinate.

Before now, traditional time management has lacked a thorough grounding in human behavior-change science.

Time Management Doesn't Work! We don't want to be managed. We need time leadership - or Time-Leverage. I demonstrate Time Leverage with the Leverage Triangle - a prop I use during my keynote addresses. The Leverage Triangle includes: a) merge, b) strategize, and c) act. I use a rubberband and demonstrate that without merge and act, people stop stretching - like a rubber band easily returns to its original shape. You need a framework - the Leverage Triangle - to take consistent action and create terrific results.

In this article, I'll provide highlights from my time management training systems:

MYTH #1: You just need more time management strategies.
Many individuals find that strategies are inconvenient or uncomfortable so they fail to create a new, reliable habit. They need Emotional Self-Leverage - a process of pushing 'buttons' on themselves.

MYTH #2: One day planner fits all.
People have input styles and processing preferences. With Time-Leverage we focus on whether you are a convergent-style person or a divergent-style person.

MYTH #3: The more tasks on your to-do list equals the more you get done.
During a presentation I say, "For many us, time management just gives us guilt and pain. It's like THE TERMINATOR. It's the Guilt-inator. 'I'll be on your back!'" Long to-do lists tend to demoralize many people. We need to be able to prioritize tasks within 2 minutes. Any longer and "divergent-style people" drop this behavior.

MYTH #4: If to-do lists do not motivate you, then you're just doing time management wrong -- and you're doomed to procrastinate.
Divergent-style people find that using a system (to "get the pain out" and to use their natural tendencies) eliminates procrastination. I teach my clients the G.O.N.O.W. system to eliminate procrastination. This has proven popular, and I put real-time coaching on my audio Free Yourself from Procrastination.

CONCLUSION:
This article has been a brief overview. If you want a framework to building a prosperous future, use this as your springboard. I devote much of each day to find new ways to serve people; therefore, I invite you to look at the resources listed below.

The best to you,

Tom
