She continued telling me what had happened to her: "The Shynnadth had overrun the earth. They had won the war 300 years before it began. Genetic Armageddon had happened here - in San Francisco, 2020. My TimeSaber's cloaking device was functioning nominally, giving me the chance to look down and see a mother and daughter walking down the sidewalk. The child, about seven years old, was a twisted hybrid of Shynnadth with 21st century human. 300 years later the Shynnadth were a genetic cross between insects and humans. But this little girl was an abomination. Lesions, pus and oozing sores. The child could barely move. I heard myself say, 'I will not let this happen.' So I quickly set the TimeSaber to 2015 - and in a flash my ship left 2020." After saying all that, Ke'la took a breath. She and I were hiding in a secluded martial arts school. I believed her. I had seen a cyber-spider implant itself into a man - and more. At the moment, we were alone. As Ke'la leaned back against the exercise mats, I closed my eyes, remembering the night we met. . . * * * "Ben." I gritted my teeth in response to my name. I hated when Morgan talked to me while we were sparring. He was my martial arts teacher, ten years older than I am. "You know what I like about you, Ben. You never give up," he said.
